Artist Statement
My work serves as an exploration of emotion, energy, and thought, and how it is visually perceived through color and form. The imagery is designed to evoke certain emotional responses for the viewers, and inspire viewers to reflect on how and why they perceive the works in the way they do. This perception is supposed to create a common feeling that viewers can achieve a level of empathy through, which seems to be more difficult as people become increasingly detached from one another in modern society. I refer to this particular part of my body of work as Telempathy, which is derived from that emphasis on empathy.
I use a unique style of line as a physical representation for what is normally invisible, usually movement, emotions, or simply a presence that is expressed.. This idea evolved out of a doodle I did as a child, and I began to integrate it into my artwork as it developed. This line inspired me to move into sculptural work and to focus on utilizing that line expressively.
I was also influenced to move into more sculptural work because of a long standing conflict between myself and traditional media. Most of my older work involves paint, because I was focused on creating strong colors in my work, but I was unable to achieve a level of realism that I felt was necessary for my message. With sculpture, I’m able to utilize color along with real, tangible media, in a way that satisfies my goals for the work I make.
