This year has been a period of exploration into abstraction and color for me, and way for me to really discern where and how I want to focus myself in Art IV. I feel like my growth has occurred mostly in the areas of color and abstraction, which has been reflected in my increased use of both in my artwork. I have been able to better understand how and when to create and apply spectra of color into a piece, as well as the mechanics of oil painting, and proportion for the human figure.
My greatest growth has been in the use of color, but my greatest needs for improvement are in the area of realism. I find myself struggling with a lot of pretty simple tasks when trying to draw realistically, that can likely be drawn back to my difficulty maintaining interest in a lot of realistic artwork. This is something that I need to work on if I want to effectively allow my ideas for Art IV projects to successfully manifest themselves.
Speaking of next year's projects, I want to focus my artwork next year into two basic groups. The first is abstract expressionism. I really enjoyed the process of creating my abstract piece in the third quarter, despite my dissatisfaction with the final result. I want to go back and really delve into that era of art, and make a lot of large pieces. The second is more complicated, and more personal, but equally if not more important. A lot of the ideas for artwork in my head involve manifesting the unseen into color and reality in my artwork. The idea of showing the flow of energy and growth and power in my art is something I've developed and tried to incorporate into my projects this year, but I want to be able to really focus in on it next year.
